Message from the President

President, AJCE


AJCE was established in 1974 by professional engineers who were members of the Institute of Professional Engineers, Japan. In 1977, Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology approved AJCE to be incorporated association. AJCE is a member association of International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) solely representing consulting industry in Japan. AJCE has served for 32 years as a body of representing consulting engineering industry in Japan to international bodies.

Fundamental activities of AJCE lie collaboration with FIDIC and ASPAC - FIDIC Asia-Pacific Member Associations. Mr. Akihiko Hirotani, immediate past president of AJCE has been serving as a FIDIC executive committee member. Further, Mr. Konomu Uchimura, vice president of AJCE has been serving as an executive board member of ASPAC. Through collaboration with Mr. Hirotani and Mr. Uchimura, AJCE will further elevate its activities.

Capacity building and nurturing of professionals working in overseas projects are important activities of AJCE in collaboration with FIDIC. Similarly, AJCE promotes technical and information exchange with FIDIC member associations and oversea consulting engineering firms.

Improvement in the ability to understand contract documents is particularly important for Japanese consulting engineers and contractors who are in charge of oversea construction projects. FIDIC contract documents are used as the standard in most of construction contracts. In this context, it is important not only secure technical competency but also cultivate understanding of contract principles and its proper application that are linked to FIDIC spirit. AJCE has been striving for raising capacity of members by learning from others and through utilizing various activities of FIDIC as well as internal study sessions.

Another important role of AJCE is to enhance technical and information exchange with oversea consulting firms and professionals that are linked with FIDIC activities. In the international market of consultancy, merger and acquisition of firms are daily affairs. As the consequences, power map of global consulting firms has been renewed frequently. In these circumstances, consulting firms in Japan have faced with difficult circumstances such as what kind of role can we play, or what kind of position do we possess.

Our missions are to bring out know-how and expert technology in Japan that have accumulated over the years for promoting capacity building and nurturing of professionals. At the same time, we endeavor to create a mechanism or platform for consulting firms to play an active role in global market together with oversea consulting firms.

I will take initiative role to achieve these missions with best of my ability.
